As Man Now Is, God once was; As God now is, Man may be
By Elder Jared Yang
Area Seventy

Man was created in God’s image (Moses 2:26, 27). Everyone who is born upon the earth is a beloved child of God, given agency that he can obtain freedom and eternal life by choosing the savior’s mediation, or obtain bondage and death by choosing Satan’s bondage and power. Everyone has the potential of becoming like God.

God knows each one of us. He trusts us and expects us to do whatever He commands us to do so that we can pass the test in this life (Abraham 3:24-25) and receive immortality and eternal life (Moses 1:39). For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved (John 3:16 – 17).

As we interact with people whether our family members, Church members, classmates, coworkers, neighbors, or friends, we must remember that we all possess nature of God and mortal weaknesses (Mosiah 3:19). We, as members of the Church who have accepted the gospel, know God and His truths. We each have the responsibility to help those around us in God’s way, to wisely use the precious free agency, to choose the right, and to pass all the trials in this life and come unto Christ (2 Nephi 2:26).

I suggest that we often ask ourselves the questions and ponder the points as follows:

1. Do we have faith and a testimony of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ? Only through the atonement and sacrifice of Jesus Christ we can obtain immortality and eternal life.
2. Do we have love of Jesus Christ or in other words charity (Moroni 7: 45)? We will see and love everyone with that charity, even our enemies and not just those whom we like.
3. Can we see others’ potential and not just what they now appear to be? We will help sinners to repent, encourage others to do good, and to extend callings to inexperienced new members.
4. Do we hope God is lenient to us and yet we are tough on others? We will humble ourselves and measure others with leniency (D & C 1:10).
5. Are we quick in forgiving those who offend us? The Lord teaches us to forgive one another and that those who do not forgive have the greater sin (D &C 64: 9).
6. Are we pure in our hearts and clean in our hands? Remember, the natural man is the enemy of God (Mosiah 3:19). 7. Do we continually seek to obtain the knowledge necessary for eternal life? Study the scriptures and the words of the prophets daily.
8. Do we work diligently in our Church callings, career and family duties? We will actively work and enjoy working. We will honor the priesthood or magnify our callings, receive satisfied approval from our employer, and share house chores. We will often attend the temple, share the gospel, and do home teaching or visiting teaching.
9. Are we willing to obey the things God and His servants have commanded us to do? We believe that the Lord will surely prepare a way for us that we can accomplish anything that He commands us to do, such as paying a full tithe, serving a full-time mission, etc. (1 Nephi 3:7).
10. Are we certain that we are prepared for the Second coming of the Savior? If you are prepared, you will not fear (D&C 38:30). If you keep the commandments and endure to the end, you shall receive eternal life (D&C 14:7).
