I grew up in a poor family. My parents and I shared a 100 square foot room with little furniture, but one picture was always hung on the wall. It was a picture of Jesus Christ. I still remember that my father clipped the picture from a magazine page, mounted it with a glass frame, and then hung it on the wall. It didn’t cost much, but it had significant meaning for our family. My father often told me stories and teachings of Jesus, so I could learn about Him when I was a young boy.
Jesus was no ordinary man! He didn’t study medicine during His ministry on earth, but the Bible recorded that He made the blind to see, the deaf to hear, and the lame to walk. He cleansed the leper and raised the dead to life. He healed the multitude, not only physically, but also spiritually.
Jesus was no ordinary man! He didn’t graduate from college nor was He certified as a teacher, but His profound teachings changed numerous lives. Even now, people continue to study His teachings and doctrines. He was indeed the Master Teacher of the world.
Jesus was no ordinary man! He held no law degree, but no Pharisees, publicans, Sadducees, or scholars could refute Him, because He is the Lawgiver.
Jesus was no ordinary man! He never studied music or singing, but countless songs of worship have been written for Him. Weekly, millions of people sing praises to His holy name. Around Christmas time, saints and people of other faiths sing phrases of adoration and acclamation to celebrate His birth.
Jesus was no ordinary man! He never studied Journalism, and yet, to this day, His Bible remains a best-seller worldwide.
Jesus was no ordinary man! He never received any diploma in architecture, and yet magnificent chapels have been built so that people can worship Him; holy temples have been erected according to His instructions.
Jesus was no ordinary man! He didn’t travel to foreign lands while He was on earth, but He is known to people around the world.
Although Jesus was not an ordinary man, He was born in a lowly manger and suffered great humiliation and affliction. His humility and obedience have been the best example for all of us. From the beginning of time, Jesus was submissive to His Father’s will, “Father, thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever” (Moses 4:2). He showed His faithfulness when He condescended to the world. Luke recorded Jesus’ agonizing words in Gethsemane, “Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done” (Luke 22:42). Even after He was resurrected, He remained true to his pledge “I am Jesus Christ; I came by the will of the Father, and I do his will” (D&C 19:24). We should all follow Christ’s selfless example of “not to be ministered unto, but to minister”, obeying the Father’s will and do so with an eye single to the glory of God.
People often show their true character when facing death or when they are in extremely dangerous or painful situations. Jesus was insulted, mocked, and was eventually crucified, the most inhumane torture of all. Nevertheless, before He died, He showed His mercy and forgiveness, and expressed His love for us, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34).
In the Bible, it reads, “This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent” (John 17:3). There was a story where three men, after they died, were brought into a room to be interviewed. The first person entered the room and the interviewer asked him, “What do you know about Jesus Christ?” This person replied by telling the story of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem and other stories in the Bible. When he finished, the interviewer said, “You may leave now.” The second person entered and was asked the same question. A minister while on earth, he answered without hesitation, “Of course I know Jesus. I preached about Him every week when I was alive.” Again, the interviewer said, “You may leave now.” When the third person entered the room and saw the interviewer, he immediately dropped to his knees and cried, “O My Lord! My beloved Lord Jesus Christ!” and they embraced each other. Out of these three men, who do you think truly knew Jesus Christ?
Mortal eyes cannot perceive spiritual things. We can recognize them only when the Holy Ghost is with us. When we always remember Jesus our Lord, bear His name, and obey His commandments, we are worthy to have His Spirit to be our constant companion and we too will be able to recognize Him when we meet Him.
I testify that Jesus is the Christ! He has broken the bonds of death. Just as Peter said, “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit”(2 Peter 3:18). As we are faced with all the turmoil in today’s society, we all are subjected to challenges in life. If you ever feel despair, depression, frustration, and worries in life, I sincerely invite you to come unto Christ. Our Savior Jesus Christ has the power to heal souls and to inspire lives. Jesus said, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
I am truly grateful for the goodness and mercy of the Lord. Because my father came unto Christ, our four family generations have had the opportunity to learn about His Gospel. Today, I also have made sure that a picture of Jesus Christ is hung in my house. I don’t have to see Him with my mortal eyes to know of His divinity. I believe what was said in the Bible is true, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). Jesus so loves the world that He was willing to lay down His life for us. Jesus Christ is our eternal Savior! Let us do all we can to know Him, to follow Him, and to come unto Him. He can help us feel true peace and happiness, and enjoy the blessings of immortality and eternal life
