December 2005
Called to Serve
By Elder Philip Ho
Area Seventy

The following is a summary of Elder Ho's article for the December 2005 Liahona.

"At the age of 95, President Hinckley is still pressing forward and visiting members of the church around the world. There is no retirement in this church. Since service is a lifetime endeavor for us, let us spend some time learning about it.

Mosiah 2:17 states that "When ye are n the service of your fellow beings, ye are only in the service of your God."

1.    Since we are in the service of our God by the way of serving our fellow beings, we don't choose whom to serve. Matthew 25:40: We don't serve people because they are more prominent in the community, or more powerful, richer, or any other worldly conditions- instead, we serve people because they are in need of our service or simply because we love them. Comparing new converts and old members, who do we feel are in greater need of our service? President Hinckley is continually reminding us to take care of our new converts.

2.    Since we are in the service of our God, we have to serve with all our heart, might, mind and strength. Refer to D&C 4:2.

3.    Since we are in the service of our God, we need to serve to learn the attributes of Jesus Christ and develop these attributes while we serve. (D&C 4: 5-6)

4.     Since we are in the service of our God, we should not expect to receive things in return. Matthew 6:1-4 reminds us to lay up for ourselves treasures in heaven and not to get discouraged when people forget to thank us for service rendered or fail to express their appreciation for the master piece presented.

5.    Since we are in the service of our God, there is no greater or smaller calling. Matthew 20:26-27. One caution here: The more is given, the more is expected. (Luke 12:48)

6.    Since we are in the service of our God, we'll go where He would want us to go. Romans 9:20-21

7.    Since we are in the service of our God, we should learn to be more humble. 1st Corinthians 3:6-7, 9.

8.    Are we serving our God? Our fellow beings? Or even ourselves? Refer to Joshua 24:14, Matthew 16:21-23.

True rewards of our service:
1.    Lay up treasures in heaven.
2.   For our brothers' happiness. (Alma 30:34)
3.    Peace in this world and eternal life for the life to come. (D&C 59:23)
