We have a tradition in our family that each November on our son Jeff’s birthday, we have a special family home evening and share the miracle that occurred when he was born.
Whenever my wife Teresa was pregnant, we prayed and fasted thanking our Father in Heaven for the privilege of having a child of God, and asking for his counsel. When it was confirmed in the spring of 1992 that my wife was expecting, we were surprised to receive a feeling that this baby should be born in Salt Lake City and wondered why. We had no relatives in Utah and discussed the cost of medical and hospital expenses there.
The day after our fast, I flew to Bangkok for a business trip, where I had dinner that evening with Darrell Donalson from Salt Lake City. At the beginning I shared with him our happiness about having a baby in November but told him nothing else. After discussing business, he suddenly offered an invitation for Teresa and our daughters to visit Salt Lake City and stay at his home whenever we wanted. I was so surprised and felt it was an answer to our fast and prayer.
On returning to Hong Kong, I told my wife about Brother Donalson’s invitation. Around the same time, my cousin from the United States visited us and extended an offer for us to also come to her home in New Jersey. Eventually we made the decision to follow the spirit, and I sent my wife and children to Salt Lake City during the month of August to stay until the baby was due.
On the morning of November 19, Hong Kong time, Teresa called and asked for my advice, because she was a week past her due date. I told her to go to the hospital the next day, and I would pray and fast for her and the baby. Around 3 a.m., I received a call from Stanley Wan, Director of Temporal Affairs, that I needed to contact the Cottonwood Hospital in Salt Lake City immediately. I called the hospital and spoke to Doctor Mason, a cardiologist, who gave me a brief explanation in medical terminology that I didn’t understand. I requested to speak to Brother Donalson, who told me that I had a healthy baby boy, but my wife was in critical condition and I needed to come immediately. I asked him to give her a Priesthood blessing as soon as possible, because I was thousands of miles away and we had to rely on the Lord.
Teresa was Stake Relief Society President, so I informed Patrick Wong, our Stake President, of her condition, and he said that he would invite the stake members to fast and pray for her recovery. I made several calls to airlines and couldn’t get a ticket, so I decided to go directly to the airport and approach every airline. I called the hospital again and was told that she had a slight chance of survival and would be kept on life support until my arrival.
It was a long flight from Hong Kong to Salt Lake City. I wept many times and pleaded with the Lord to let her live, and why should she be so far away from me at this time near death, when we had acted on the promptings of the spirit? My only comfort was that we had obeyed our feelings, and there must be a reason. I told myself that we made the decision, and now I would have to live with the consequences, whether positive or negative.
Spending all of these hours on the airplane, I had much time to reflect, and I naturally thought of what I would do if my wife should pass away as well as the ramifications if she survived and needed long-term care.
Upon my arrival at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital, I was told by a nurse to wait outside for a moment, which seemed like a year to me. A few minutes later as I entered the room, I was surprised to see Teresa sitting up with a smile and beckoning to me with her right hand. Tears of relief rolled down my face as she told me about the previous weeks and the miracle our family had received. My wife related that the doctor told her that she had a rare case where the embryonic fluid had seeped into her lungs through the blood stream, which caused her lungs to cease functioning, and her heart to stop. As a result she was immediately put on life support. The doctors, nurses and staff were astonished by her complete recovery within a week with no side affects. The cardiologist and obstetrician examined her before her release and said that she was in good health for being in intensive care for nine days.
While staying at the home of Brother Donalson, he related his version of the birth of our baby. During the early morning of November 19, his wife took Teresa to the hospital while he helped get the children off to school and prepared to go to work. On the way to his office, he had the feeling that he needed to go back to the hospital. He followed this impression, and when he arrived Teresa was in the labor room, and he could see through a window in the door that she was smiling and doing fine. His wife and her friend had left to get some lunch. Minutes later he observed that Sister Ling was having problems and immediately called for help. A nurse pressed an alert button and many doctors and nurses rushed into the room. A cardiologist from another hospital, visiting his friend that morning, also provided help.
The obstetrician, who is a priesthood holder, made the important decision to deliver the baby immediately, as her heart stopped beating, thus saving his life. Even one minute later, my son Jeff would have died. We now knew why we had come to Salt Lake City. Many friends put Teresa’s name on the prayer rolls of the temple, and we felt that she received the best professional care available by a group of people who were full of charity.
Our family has learned many lessons from this special and wonderful experience, especially the power of the Priesthood and the power of fasting and prayer. Ether 12:12 states, “For if there be no faith among the children of men God can do no miracle among them, wherefore, he showed not himself until after their faith.”
We have taught our children that it is not enough to listen to the spirit, but they must act upon the impressions they receive.
