Sunday 31st August 2008 was a day to remember for many as the Hong Kong Temple President, President Charles Goo and his wife, Sister Helen Goo visited the Singapore Stake Center to impart some of their knowledge and experience to the Singaporean saints.

During their long awaited fireside on marriage and family, Sister Goo stressed that having a knit family is important to Latter Day Saints and that home is the basis for a righteous life. She also said that family unity is the fundamental value needed to return to our heavenly father. She then imparted some of her own tips on how to keep the family cohesive. Methods like taking a stand and keeping the end goal in mind were some of the many that the shared with the captivated congregation.

Having a family mission statement was also crucial in keeping the family together. It makes goals with the family. Goals like spritual, academic and personal goals are essential for the family. Regular scripture reading with the family also helps build family bonds. The Goo family reads their scripture at 5:45 in the morning! Apart from the scripture, Sister Goo said that Family Home Evening on Monday nights are also important. She jokingly said that Family Home Evening is not Family Home Evening without fantastic food right at the end.

President Goo aids the family by giving a priesthood interview very fast Sunday, he also heads family counsel where in it, they treat everyone with kindness as respect because ultimately, we are all Heavenly Fathers children.

When it was President Goo’s turn, he announced the two rules for successful marriage. 1) That the wife is always right

2) She might be wrong, but always refer to rule one

He said that covenant relationships are a two way promise with God. There are two choices, either we keep it and we attain blessings or we do not keep our covenants and likewise, Heavenly Father would withhold the blessings of heaven.

In the Doctrine and Covenants Section 109, verse 8 it says “ Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing, and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God “

President Goo said, this is the marriage covenant as that if we stood by it together and kept it, he promised the windows of heaven would be opened to us.
