It is fast becoming a tradition for many Stakes of the Church in the United States to host a nativity display to ring in the Christmas season. This year the Singapore 1st ward decided to host one for the members of the Stake and for the general public. On the evening of December 4th, the chapel was filled with 63 nativity sets from all over the world—from Peru to Katmandu, from Ireland to Spain. There were even a couple from the Holy Land which were carved out of olive wood.
Each one was very unique and interesting to look at and study. They were all shapes and sizes. One was as large as a tabletop and another was so small it fit in the shell of a walnut. White Christmas lights, pictures of the Savior, and Christmas music sung by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir added to the beauty and reverence of the occasion. It is estimated that 350 people viewed the display. Because there was so much to see, many toured the display several times.
After viewing the nativity scenes, visitors were invited into the cultural hall for sweet breads and juice. The DVD entitled, “Joy to the World” was playing. Visitors could sit and eat their treats while watching the DVD.
Missionaries were on hand to answer questions. Visitors were offered a free copy of the ‘Nativity’ video as they exited the room. Many hope that this will become a regular event here in Singapore. It certainly helped those of us who visited the display to remember the true reason for celebrating this holy holiday.
