Eagle Scouts Make a Difference
By Melanie Tidwell
Darin Brinley and Corey Tidwell, both of Singapore 1st ward, recently earned the highest award given by the Boys Scouts of America—that of Eagle Scout. Both boys had to come up with a plan to make a positive difference in the world.
Shortly after the tsunami disaster, Corey Tidwell decided to help raise funds to purchase transistor radios to help in the relief efforts sponsored by MediaCorp. He did this by collecting donations of gently used clothing, toys, shoes, etc, which were later sold at a garage sale. Family members, friends, and fellow boy scouts helped with the project by handing out flyers, collecting, cleaning and pricing the donated items, selling the items at the garage sale, and cleaning up afterwards. Enough money was collected at the garage sale to purchase 64 transistor radios and batteries. After donating the radios to MediaCorp, they asked Corey for a live radio interview. This was an opportunity to talk about how he got the idea for his project and what motivated him to go through with it, and how he completed the project.
Darin Brinley’s project was to prepare and paint murals on the basement walls of the Metta Home facility for handicapped individuals. He spent time raising funds for supplies and recruiting volunteers. The project itself involved cleaning and taping the wall surfaces, painting the base coats, projecting images onto the walls and drawing outlines, and finally painting the murals. After a 2 day period and a total of 155.5 man hours, 6 walls were painted with murals, providing the much needed visual stimuli for the residents as well as an attractive environment for them to enjoy.
