Seminar by Elder Clayton Christensen-
"Why do families fail in the process to succeed?"

by Sis. Ann Castleton
10 May 2006

The event sponsored by Jamiyah and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints featuring Dr. Clayton Christensen was a great success. It was held at the Jamiyah Business School. There were approximately 100+ people in attendance. Jamiyah presented Elder Christensen with a copy of the Qur’an which pleased him very much. Elder Tan, Dr. Christensen, and others were taken on a tour of the Jamiyah Business School which provides classes for students who are not able to attend other schools because they have dropped out, cannot afford it, and/or have no family support.

Dr. Christensen spoke on “Why Do Families Fail in the Process to Succeed?” It was very well received and very thought-provoking. One of the statements Dr. Christensen made was - “Our deepest happiness in this life comes from emotionally intimate relationships with others – spouses, children, family and friends. These relationships take time, effort and care to build. People with high needs for achievement (such as us) often want such relationships, but subconsciously under-invest in them, in favor of activities that provide more immediate evidence of achievement.”

The same thought process that works in a business also applies to our homes. We try to do things the best, most efficient way we can, sometimes unconsciously sewing the seeds of failure. Success in business and success in family has to be a commitment to both, but not at the expense of the other.
